The Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicles (FHTV) is a family of diesel powered trucks in service with the U.S. Army. The FHTV consists of the Palletized Load System (PLS), the Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) and the Heavy Equipment Transporter (HET). The trucks are manufactured by Oshkosh Corporation. The heavy tactical vehicles are designed for cross-country military missions to transport ammunition, petroleum, oils and lubricants, unit resupply, and other missions throughout the tactical environment to support modern and highly mobile combat units.
The PLS entered service in 1993 and consists of the M1074A1/M1075A1 10-wheel (10x10) tactical truck with self load/unload capability. The PLS carries its payload on flatrack cargo beds, M1076 trailers, or International Standards Organization (ISO) containers. The PLS is built to carry ammunition and other critical supplies and is the backbone of the U.S. Army re-supply and distribution system. The PLS utilizes the Enhanced Container Handling Unit (ECHU), which attaches to the lifting arm of the PLS and allows container upload and offload without the use of a flatrack. The M1074A1/M1075A1 trucks can be transported by C-5 Galaxy / Super Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster military transport aircraft.
The HEMTT A4 is an 8-wheel (8x8) truck powered by a Caterpillar C15 15.2L diesel engine with 500 hp. The HEMTT A4 comes in several configurations, including the M978 Tanker variant used to refuel tactical vehicles and helicopters; the M983 Patriot Tractor used to tow the Patriot Missile System and Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS); the M984 Recovery Truck aka Wrecker used to recover vehicles; the M985 Cargo Truck; the M977 Cargo Truck with a materiel handling crane; the M983 LET (Light Equipment Transporter); and the M1120 LHS (Load Handling System). The M1120 LHS has been selected as the vehicle platform for the Missile Defense Agency's Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) program. The HEMTT can be transported by C-5 Galaxy, C-17 Globemaster, and C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft. The HEMTT entered service in 1982.
The HET A1 is an 8 wheel (8x8) truck powered by a Caterpillar C18 18.1L diesel engine with 700 hp. The HET A1 is designed to responsive, rapid movement of mission-critical equipment such as the M1 Abrams tank, Stryker and M2/M3 Bradley armored vehicles, recovery vehicles and construction equipment. The HET A1 can be transported by C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster military transport aircraft.
